Puan replaces Tjahjo as PDI-P faction chief

Puan Maharani, the daughter of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chief patron and former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, has replaced Tjahjo Kumolo as the party faction chief at the House of Representatives.
"Puan is officially the faction leader now while Tjahjo will focus on party's internal affairs ahead of the 2014 general elections," PDI-P faction member Trimedya Panjaitan said after attending Megawati's birthday lunch on Monday.
PDI-P politician Maruarar Sirait confirmed the replacement, saying that the decision had been made during a party meeting last week.
"We will announce it some time this week," Maruarar said as quoted by tempo.co.
Maruarar denied rumors saying that Tjahjo would resign from his post at the House and that the replacement was part of efforts to groom Puan as the party's presidential candidate for the election.
"There was no discussion about him resigning his post at the House during the meeting. [The replacement] was a common thing," he said.
Separately, Tjahjo, who is also the party secretary general, confirmed his replacement, citing that he had been holding the position for too long.
"I've hold the post since 2003. But I'll still be the party secretary general and a House member," he said. (swd/mtq)
