Spring Festival celebrations in N.W. China

People in Northwest China are known for being enthusiastic and unrestrained. To see what they are doing for Spring Festival, CCTV reporter Li Qiuyuan went to the suburb of Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province.
Spring festival is coming to town.
Streets are getting crowded in this small town near Xi'an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province in Northwest China, as people rushing into the market to stock up festival supplys.
Li Qiuyuan said, It looks like door god pictures and spring festival couplets are the most popular items in the market.
A local resident said, "I came to get a pair of door god pictures."
Another local resident said, "I'd like to get some spring festival couplets."
It's often said that a small town can provide a more authentic experience of the local culture, customs and history.
This is especially true for this one near Xi'an.
Li said, It looks like the foggy weather hasn't affect people's festive mood at all.
In the southern part of the town, Yang Caixia is busy preparing for the grand celebration for her family.
Instead of going out to the market for decorations, she decided to make them by herself.
And all she needs, is a pair of scissors, and some red paper..
Li said, "So this is what people here do for new year preparation, they make these incredible paper cuttings and use them to decorate their house, now I may not be a professional paper cutter, but I'm gonna give it my best shot, and see what it's gonna turn out!"
Apparently I haven't realized how hard paper cutting is until I finally got my hands on it.
But, with the help of my awesome teacher, I managed to make one paper flower in the end.
Yang Caixia is so good at making these paper cuttings that she doesn't even need to sketch out the shape before she cuts.
Yang said, "I've learn paper-cutting since I was little, it's kind of a family tradition."
And meanwhile, people live in the northern part of the town have another tradition to follow.
Li said, Quite surprisingly, Li Suijun and his family are in the yard making tiger dolls.
According to him, the tigers are for the kids in town.
Li Suijun said, "We make tiger dolls for kids because tiger in our culture is an auspicious creature that could avoid disasters; we hope the children could grow healthily and happily in the New Year."
As the night falls, we discovered another side of the town—the "nightlife".
Local resident Liu Pengfei said, "We came to practice the drum dance every night after dinner."
Li said, "So this is where people in town gather and practise the drum dance, it's been a long held tradition that people in town held their annual dance competition/ performance for the new year celebration. And check out the huge drum right here, it's really big.."
It appears that this drum dance is not only a sport for young adults, it can also be enjoyed by the elders and the little ones.
A local resident said, "I'm 12, I like coming here, it's fun."
The audience seems pretty happy watching the show too.
A local resident said, "Yea, my husband is in the team playing drum, I came here to watch."
Yes, we are almost there.
Waiting ahead, is the year of mighty dragon.
And lets look forward to celebrating the noisiest, most joyous and longest festival of the year.
