Worshippers crowded inside Longshan Temple in downtown Taipei at the stroke of midnight to celebrate the beginning of the Lunar New Year.
The celebration is traditionally highlighted by a religious ceremony to honor the gods of heaven and earth, the gods of the household and family ancestors. It's believed that praying on New Year's Eve will bring good fortune and that by staying up, evil spirits can be fended off.
The Chinese New Year is a traditional time of great celebration and family get-togethers over large, festive meals.
Families clean their houses to symbolically sweep away bad luck and to make way for good luck. Today (Monday) is the first day of the Year of the Dragon. The dragon is the fifth sign of the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac that is used across Asia.
