KARACHI: Men like Mohammad Shehzad, 35, are not born everyday. He has done nothing glorified and in fact committed a crime so heinous that it would make anyone's skin crawl.
Shehzad, who runs a small glasswork business, is guilty of slaughtering his own flesh and blood. The sad part is that the victims of this brutal murder were not even aware of the crimes they had committed but in fact, they were punished for the crime that was allegedly committed by their mother, Aaliya.

Aaliya and Shehzad were married about four years ago and that is when this saga began. Shehzad was convinced from the start that Aaliya had illicit relations with a man called Arif, despite the fact that Aaliya had time and time again explained to Shehzad that the relationship was entirely platonic.

It came to a point where Shehzad actually started believing that his two daughters, Khushi Fatima, one-and-a-half year old and Suman Fatima, eight-month old, were not his at all, but in fact Arif's. He would keep confronting Aaliya and she would keep denying the allegation, the differences grew and the situation became worse. Finally, Aaliya shifted to her parents' house located at the R area in Korangi.

There was a family function at Aaliya's parents' house on Sunday and Shehzad came to join in the celebrations. He ended up staying the night and also as always got into a fight with Aaliya. Early morning the next day Shehzad took his daughters and went home, a small 80 square yard house located in the outskirts of the city on Street no 15, Sector 36-G, within the limits of Landhi police.

The heartless man then took the girls to one of the small rooms in the house and apologised to them, saying that he cannot bear to look at the girls dying a little everyday and cannot bear the thought of them growing up with a mother with such a loose character, after supposedly purging his conscience clean, he proceeded to cut the throats of the little girls who had probably not even grasped their father's words.

The barbarian then called the children's grandparents' house to tell them about what he had done, after which he went to the police station to surrender himself and confess to his ugly crime.

According to the police when Shehzad reached the police station, his clothes were stained with blood. Giving details about the preliminary questioning SHO Ghulam Ahmed Sheikh said that Aaliya and his daughters had left Shehzad's house two days ago after a dispute. On Sunday night, there was a family function at Aaliya's parents house, which Shehzad attended, stayed there for the night and fought with Aaliya. In the morning, he took the girls and went home, where he slaughtered the girls using a knife, which too has been discovered, said the SHO.

Aaliya's family was undoubtedly shocked by the incident and insisted that Shehzad be punished strictly, as he was mentally stable and murdered the girls only because he was angry at Aaliya. They went on to say that Shehzad was brilliant at his job, but he mostly stayed home and forced Aaliya to bring money from her parents. As now he has no better excuse to get out of the situation he is accusing Aaliya of having illicit relations.

The people of his area seconded Aaliya's family's opinion and confirmed that Shehzad was not suffering from any mental illness.

The bodies of the girls were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre from where they were taken to Korangi for burial. The girls were laid to rest in the Korangi graveyard. An FIR No 171/09 under Section 302 has been registered on behalf of Aaliya's brother, Naeem.

End.

Pro-Laden cleric dies
Published Date: July 14, 2009

RIYADH: Sheikh Abdullah ibn Jebreen, a prominent Saudi cleric who praised Osama bin Laden and preached violence against Muslim Shiites, Christians and Jews, died yesterday aged 77, his official website said. "Our Sheikh, Imam and father Abdullah ibn Jebreen has passed to God's mercy," said the website. Ibn Jebreen shot to international fame when he praised Osama bin Laden in 2003 calling him a "warrior in the path of God" and wished him victory. Citing government and medical sources, the New York Times reported last month ibn Jebreen received police protection whilst at a hospital in Germany before his departure in June "because the cleric's diatribes are considered a crime in this country, where hate speech is illegal".

Saudis shut foreign school

RIYADH: The Saudi government closed an international school in Riyadh after 20 students were diagnosed with swine flu, the health ministry said yesterday. A health ministry official would not identify the school, only saying that it served people from an east Asian country. Riyadh has several schools serving the children of hundreds of thousands of workers from east Asia, mainly the Philippines and Indonesia. The school outbreak and 12 other newly diagnosed cases pushed the total for Saudi Arabia to 216, less than six weeks after the first case was detected.

[inti-net] Israel accuses Lebanon of violating UN Resolution 1701

Israel accuses Lebanon of violating UN Resolution 1701

Jul. 14, 2009
Yaakov Katz , THE JERUSALEM POST
Israel accused Lebanon of violating United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 on Tuesday after a Hizbullah arms cache hidden inside a southern Lebanese town accidentally exploded.

The blast occurred inside the village of Hirbet Selm, some 20 kilometers north of the Israel-Lebanon border, south of the Litani River and within the area which falls under the mandate of the UNIFIL multi-national force.

According to Israeli defense officials, the cache was hidden in a storehouse inside the village and contained dozens of 122mm Katyusha rockets as well as high-powered machine guns. Some of the rockets reportedly flew into the sky.

Contrary to Lebanese media reports which claimed that the cache was hidden in the village before the Second Lebanon War in 2006, the Israeli defense officials said that the weaponry was recently placed inside the storehouse.

"This is a major violation of resolution 1701," one official said. "The weaponry was stored inside a village and is proof of our longstanding claim that Hizbullah uses civilian infrastructure to hide its weaponry."

According to Lebanese media reports, the Lebanese Armed Forces and UNIFIL sealed off the area surrounding the storehouse. The two reportedly announced plans to launch an investigation into the incident.

Last week, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the fragile relationship between Israel and Lebanon was threatened by allegations of Israeli spy cells operating in Lebanon, and by Israeli concerns that Lebanese "militias" are operating outside of state control and that Hizbullah has been deployed to southern Lebanon.

[inti-net] Association Formed to Unite Domestic, Overseas Researchers

http://thejakartaglobe.com/national/association-formed-to-unite-domestic-overseas-researchers/317901

July 13, 2009
Anita Rachman

Association Formed to Unite Domestic, Overseas Researchers
A forum to unite Indonesian researchers at home and overseas in a bid to support domestic research activities has been established under the name of the International Indonesian Research Association.

Fasli Jalal, director general of higher education at the Ministry of National Education, said on Monday the association had been formally established in The Hague last week.

The declaration was made to improve cooperation among Indonesian researchers, university students, lecturers and Indonesians who are currently holding important positions in prominent companies overseas.

"This is one way to bring together all the country's academics and researchers working overseas," Fasli said.

"We will soon follow this up with the release of an online portal that will be able to keep their individual data online."

He said the new association would function as a forum to achieve synergy between researchers inside and outside the country. Fasli added that hundreds of Indonesian researchers worked overseas - about 200 at the moment - with many of them having secured patents.

Fasli said the government hoped that through well-maintained relationships, Indonesian researchers overseas could still contribute to national development.

"For example, contributions can be made through the portal," he said. "With a portal, Indonesian universities can look for research partners or invite researchers as visiting lecturers to Indonesia."

Fasli said the ministry supported the efforts of researchers to increase their knowledge and experience in foreign countries.

He said that researchers who studied or worked overseas were "fighting" for Indonesia by passing on their experiences when they return home.

However, he said the government needed to tap the potential of these people by setting a clear agenda for them.

"Some people might not feel like returning because of the poor research culture in the country or because they are less appreciated," Fasli said. "But we will fix this, we are now putting some new programs together."

He said that domestic universities would prepare a program for returning lecturers and researchers.

Fasli said that six months prior to returning from overseas studies, the researchers would be asked to draft a plan with their institutions, such as whether they would teach certain subjects or be responsible for research projects. If governmental funding was available, he said, a special research financing scheme would be created.

Nurul Taufiqu Rochman, the chairman of the Indonesian Society of Nanotechnology Studies and a researcher at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, who spent 14 years in Japan, said it was not easy to finally decide to pack up and return home. He said that when he was preparing to return from Japan, he was aware of the gap between that country and Indonesia in terms of research work.

"I was shocked when I first got back home," Nurul said. "There were few facilities and little appreciation for our work."

Indonesian researchers, he said, needed to be more creative and to see obstacles as challenges.

[inti-net] Boy Undergoes Surgery To Reattach Penis

Boy Undergoes Surgery To Reattach Penis

A young boy whose penis was accidentally severed during a mass circumcision ceremony in Riau underwent a second operation over the weekend to reattach his organ.

Nazrul Edy, a spokesman for Awal Bross Hospital in the provincial capital, Pekanbaru, told the Jakarta Globe on Monday that Sunday's procedure "went very well," though he was quick to add that it was still to early to determine if there would be any permanent damage.

Reports said the incident occurred when the victim, identified as 9-year-old Komaruddin, attended the ceremony in Rengat subdistrict, Indragiri Hulu, on July 6.

Initially, only 100 boys were registered to take part in the ceremony, organized by the provincial welfare agency, but 170 children arrived, overwhelming about 20 medical workers and doctors, reports said.

As Komaruddin was undergoing the procedure a tragic slip of the laser-cutting device occurred, removing the penis instead of the foreskin. The incident caused panic among those participating in the ceremony, which was canceled with only 70 boys having undergone the procedure.

An initial attempt to reattach Komaruddin's severed organ at Rengat General Hospital on the same day as the accident was not completely successful, and four days later he was transferred to Awal Bross.

Nazrul said it was too early to tell whether Komaruddin's penis would function normally in the future.

He added that Komaruddin's surgery was fully paid for by the Indragiri Hulu government.

[inti-net] Muslim Dress Code Imposed in Pekanbaru

http://thejakartaglobe.com/home/muslim-dress-code-imposed-in-pekanbaru/318128

July 14, 2009
Muslim Dress Code Imposed in Pekanbaru
Municipal officials in Pekanbaru, Riau, are requiring school children to wear traditional Muslim dress every Friday as part of an effort to bolster the region's Malay identity, an official said on Tuesday.

The policy, which came into effect this week with the start of the new school year, means that pupils from elementary to senior high schools would have to wear traditional dress, said Giman, an official with the Pekanbaru municipal education office. "It is aimed at getting the younger generation to appreciate the Malay Muslim heritage of the region."

Female students would be required to wear long skirts, long-sleeved blouses and headscarves, while male students would have to wear loose-fitting pants, collarless long-sleeved shirts and the peci , a traditional brimless Malay cap.

"The same policy is already in force for civil servants," Gimin said, adding that there would not be any immediate penalties imposed on those who failed to comply with the dress code.

He said that for other days of the week, students would wear their usual national school uniforms. Gimin declined to comment further, and would not say whether the rule would also be applied to non-Muslim students and private schools.

Pekanbaru Deputy Mayor Erizal Muluk, however, was quoted by state new agency Antara as saying that the regulation would only apply to Muslim children and state schools.

"If there are schools with predominantly non-Muslim students, and the basis of the schools is also not Islam, then we will not force them to dress in the Muslim way," he said.

[inti-net] Women flogged for wearing trousers in Sudan

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/women-flogged-for-wearing-trousers-in-sudan-1745388.html

Women flogged for wearing trousers in Sudan

Tuesday, 14 July 2009

Police in Sudan arrested 13 women in a raid on a cafe and flogged 10 of them in public for wearing trousers in violation of the country's strict Islamic law, one of those arrested said today.

The 13 women were at a cafe in the capital, Khartoum, when they were detained on Friday by officers from the public order police, which enforces the implementation of Sharia law in public places.

The force randomly enforces an alcohol ban and often scolds young men and women mingling in public.

One of those arrested on Friday, journalist Lubna Hussein, said she is challenging the charges, which can be punishable by up to 40 lashes.

"I didn't do anything wrong," Ms Hussein said.

Islamic Sharia law has been strictly implemented in Sudan since the ruling party came to power in a 1989 military coup.

Public order cases usually involve quick summary trials with sentences carried out shortly afterward, as was the case with 10 of the women arrested on Friday. They were flogged and fined 250 Sudanese pounds (£74).

Ms Hussein and two other women chose to go to trial. Today she was summoned for questioning and now awaits a decision from the prosecutor on when the case could go to trial.

Women in northern Sudan, particularly in Khartoum, dress in traditional outfits that include a shawl over their head and shoulder. Western dress is uncommon.

Ms Hussein said she decided to speak out because flogging is a practice many women endure in silence. She even sent printed invitations to the press and public figures to attend her expected trial.

"Let the people see for themselves. It is not only my issue," she said. "This is retribution to thousands of girls who are facing flogging for the last 20 years because of wearing trousers," she said. "They prefer to remain silent."

[inti-net] US hails Karabakh peace talks as 'breakthrough'

http://www.hdn.com.tr/n.php?n=us-hails-karabakh-peace-talks-as-8216breakthrough8217-2009-07-14

US hails Karabakh peace talks as 'breakthrough'
Wednesday, July 15, 2009
FULYA ÖZERKAN
ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
Ahead of the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents' key meeting in Russia, US mediator of the Minsk Group Matt Bryza tells the Daily News that the strengthening dialogue has brought mediation efforts to a 'new and hopeful level' and welcomes Moscow's contributions

The United States has welcomed the progress in the peace process between regional rivals Armenia and Azerbaijan concerning the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory.

"There is a real breakthrough in negotiations," said Matt Bryza, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. The U.S. official on Monday attended the European Union's flagship Nabucco natural gas pipeline project signing ceremony in Ankara, where he spoke to the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review.

Together with Russia and France, the United States is co-chairing an international panel, the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, or OSCE, which has sought to mediate the dispute between the two countries.

The presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan are due to meet in Russia on Friday for the sixth time in 13 months and the third time in three months.

"The OSCE Minsk Group's mediation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is accelerating. . The increasing pace of their meetings reflects a strengthening of the dialogue between the presidents," Bryza said.

"These factors have brought our mediation effort to a new and hopeful level. We hope the presidents' meeting on July 17 will build on the important progress they made in St. Petersburg on June 4, and clear the way to finalize the set of basic principles proposed by the Minsk Group co-chairs in Madrid in November 2007."

He stressed President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were providing their personal support to his efforts as the U.S. mediator.

"The three Minsk Group co-chairs, from the United States, Russia, and France, work together as a strong and collaborative team. We welcome the important and positive contributions by Russian President Medvedev," said Bryza.

In recent remarks marking the most revealing announcement to date on the details of the peace process, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said the Armenian pullback from five territories was reflected in the Minsk Group's proposals and only after the complete withdrawal could there be discussion about the status of Karabakh.

"The question of the phased withdrawal of Armenian forces from occupied territories outside Nagorno-Karabakh is the first stage. Immediately after the signing of agreements, troops are slated to be withdrawn from five regions," Aliyev was quoted as saying, adding that the withdrawal of forces from the two regions would take place five years after the initial pull back.

While in London on Monday, Aliyev, who did not attend the Nabucco signing ceremony in Ankara, instead sending his energy minister Natik Aliyev, said Nagorno-Karabakh would never be recognized as an independent country.

[inti-net] Tips to prevent infertility

Tips to prevent infertility

ANI
Kuala Lampur, July 14, 2009
First Published: 15:37 IST(14/7/2009)
Last Updated: 19:58 IST(14/7/2009)

Women better avoid late marriage and men tight pants, for they may lead to fewer babies, according to a Malaysian study.
Dr V. Jeyabalan a Pantai Hospital fertility specialist, says that blames smoking, casual sex, and junk food are the other factors that are to blame for causing infertility.

"The changing role of women is the main reason for their infertility," the New Straits-Times quoted him as saying. "They are getting married late now as they have to build a career alongside men to become equal breadwinners," he added. He said so while reacting to a recent United Nations Children''s Fund report that Malaysians were having fewer babies these days, compared with the situation in 1990.

According to him, the intake of junk food-which mostly contained additives and meats injected with hormones-has increased among career-oriented women
He says that such women also have multiple sex partners, and that they sometimes even indulge in casual sex, which results in sexually transmitted diseases.
"Venereal diseases such as gonorrhoea and syphilis combined with previous abortions and smoking, which has gradually become increasingly common among women, can prevent conception and sometimes cause miscarriages," he said.

He said of the 30 couples he saw on the average daily, most of the men and women were aged between 30 and 40 seeking to have their first child.
Jeyabalan pointed out that wearing tight pants and the presence of petrol fumes and chemicals around their workplaces generally reduce fertility among men.
He called on the Government to get insurance companies to pay the bills of those seeking fertility treatment."In Western countries, because fertility treatments are expensive, the cost is either subsidised by the government or it can be claimed against a patient''s medical policy. But in Malaysia, those who suffer from childlessness can do neither," he said.

[inti-net] Israeli warships cross Suez Canal again

Israeli warships cross Suez Canal again

By Haaretz Service

Two Israel Navy warships made a rare crossing of Egypt's Suez Canal on Tuesday, heading from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea in a voyage that could be seen as a warning signal to Iran.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that the crossings were legitimate in accordance with an agreement between Cairo and Jerusalem.

One of the ships, the Hanit, had reportedly already crossed the canal both ways in June, in what a port source called the first case of a large Israeli warship using the strategic waterway. However, this was not possible to confirm officially.

The other ship to cross on Tuesday, the Eilat, was named after a destroyer sunk by Egypt with the loss of 47 lives shortly after the 1967 Six Day War, the source told AFP.

Israeli defense officials said that two missile boats did cross the canal, but they spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter.

During the maneuver in June, the Hanit accompanied an Israeli Dolphin-class submarine for a drill off Eilat - the first such voyage for the secret craft and a sign of Israel's growing strategic reach, Reuters quoted defense sources as saying.

Witnesses told Reuters the vessel docked briefly at Eilat's naval base before departing. But an Israeli defense official was quoted as saying there would be no permanent deployment there of the German-made submarines - of which Israel has three, with two more on order.

A senior Egyptian security official later denied reports that an Israeli submarine had sailed the Suez Canal last month as part of a naval drill.

"Egypt does not allow Israeli warships to enter our territory," Army Radio quoted the official as saying
